As the personification of all that was evil, Apep was seen as a giant snake, crocodile, serpent, or in later years, in a few cases, as a dragon, leading to titles such as Serpent from the Nile, and Evil lizard. Some elaborations even said that he stretched 16 yards in length and had a head made of flint.
The Apep snake made itself an enemy of Ra the Kemetic god of the Sun and every night as he descended into the Underworld the Apep would attack the barge which carries him. It had to be defeated by Ra’s bodyguards who principally were Set and Anubis. Without their assistance evil would have claimed the king.
